Improving Medication Adherence Through Communication

Welcome to Improving Medication Adherence Through Communication, a one-hour course designed to help healthcare professionals support patients in understanding, accepting, and following their medication regimens after a Venous Thromboembolism (VTE).

Non-adherence to anticoagulants and other prescribed medications is a common challenge that can have serious consequences. Yet in many cases, it stems not from unwillingness but from confusion, fear, or misalignment between patient beliefs and clinical advice. This course explores how effective, empathetic communication can uncover these barriers and lead to better outcomes.

You’ll explore:

  • The psychological and emotional factors that influence adherence
  • How to identify and address patient concerns or misconceptions
  • Techniques to foster open dialogue and shared decision-making
  • Ways to reinforce the value of adherence in a patient-centred, respectful way

This unit includes:

  • Communication Issues in Medication Adherence: A session unpacking the hidden influences behind poor adherence and offering a structured communication model for improvement.
  • Patient Experience: Real stories highlighting how communication, both positive and negative, has shaped patients’ understanding and behaviour.
  • Keiron Power Discussion: A practical, clinician-led conversation offering insights into adherence challenges and how they can be tackled in everyday consultations.

By the end of this course, you’ll be better equipped to build trust, identify barriers, and support long-term adherence — all through skilled and thoughtful communication.
