Adherence and Engagement - A Holistic Approach to Patient Behaviour
Welcome to Adherence and Engagement: A Holistic Approach to Patient Behaviour, a two-hour training unit aimed at deepening your understanding of how communication influences patient adherence, motivation, and long-term engagement with care following VTE (Venous Thromboembolism).
Non-adherence to treatment plans, including medication regimens, is a common and complex challenge in VTE care. This course offers practical insights and evidence-based strategies to help you better understand and address the psychological, social, and emotional factors that influence patient behaviour.
You’ll explore:
- Why patients may struggle to adhere to treatment, even with the best intentions
- How communication shapes patient beliefs, trust, and decision-making
- Strategies for fostering shared decision-making and enhancing treatment engagement
- The value of understanding behavioural triggers, motivations, and resistance
This unit includes:
- Communication Issues in Medication Adherence: A video examining common barriers to adherence, the role of belief systems, and a structured model for improving communication around treatment.
- Encouraging Behavioural Change: Practical guidance on initiating conversations that help patients consider and commit to meaningful lifestyle adjustments.
- Patient and Keiron Power Discussion: A candid conversation between a patient and specialist pharmacist offering a real-world lens on the challenges and successes of managing long-term care.
By the end of this course, you’ll be better equipped to support your patients not only in following medical advice but in actively engaging with their own care. This holistic approach fosters trust, shared understanding, and ultimately better outcomes in VTE recovery and prevention.
