Supporting Emotional Recovery After VTE

Welcome to Supporting Emotional Recovery After VTE, a one-hour course designed to help healthcare professionals recognise and respond to the emotional and psychological impact of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) on patients.

While the physical effects of VTE are often prioritised in treatment, the emotional aftermath is just as important — and frequently overlooked. Many patients experience anxiety, fear of recurrence, low mood, or trauma following a clotting event, and how these emotions are addressed during early care can shape their long-term recovery.

This course is built to equip you with a deeper understanding of how to:

  • Recognise the signs of emotional distress following VTE
  • Respond empathetically and appropriately, even in time-pressured settings
  • Offer support and reassurance that can make a meaningful difference
  • Use simple strategies to validate and manage negative emotions without needing to become a mental health specialist

This unit includes:

  • Helping People Manage Negative Emotions Following VTE: A session exploring common emotional responses and practical approaches for supporting psychological recovery.
  • Two Patient Videos: First-hand accounts from individuals with lived experience of VTE, sharing how communication — both good and bad — affected their emotional journey.

By the end of this session, you'll be more confident in acknowledging and supporting the emotional needs of patients, helping to promote a more compassionate and holistic approach to care.
